Hindu devotees celebrate Kavady festival

Hindus on the South Coast celebrated their annual Thai Poosam Kavady festival which concluded last weekend.

During Thai Poosam Kavady, a Hindu religious festival, the Hindu deity, Lord Muruga, is worshipped.

This religious occasion falls on the full moon day in the Tamil month Thai (January). The festival is one of the biggest on the South African Indian festival calendar.

Devotees from the Umbango Sri Siva Soobramoniar Alayam, Port Shepstone Tamil Association and the Umzimkulwana Shri Siva Soobramoniar Temple at Langalibalele observed the festival last Saturday, in a colourful parade at their temples.

Devotees in their hundreds, both young and old, braved the heat and carried the Kavady, which is a wooden frame decked with flowers, Hindu deities, lime, other fruit, and milk in honour of Lord Muruga.

It was lots of hard work and dedication from all the local temples and their members to host a successful two weeks of Kavady.
All temple organisations thanked their kind sponsors and all devotees in taking part in the annual festival.

The Umzimkulwana Shri Siva Soobramoniar temple at Langalibalele also observed its annual Thai Poosam Kavady last Saturday.
