Learnership to equip matrics with health care skills
Hibiscus Hospital Group aims to empower learners to make a significant impact on the health and well-being of their communities.
With unemployment being one of the major challenges in South Africa, the Hibiscus Hospital Group has afforded 21 matriculants from three regions; Port Shepstone, Cato Ridge and Scottburgh an opportunity to equip themselves with Community Health Care skills.
The hospital has partnered with Thutobophelo Training and Skills Academy to facilitate and provide the training for the learners for 12 months.

On completion of the course, they will be awarded NQF Level 4 certificates accredited by the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA).
Speaking at the launch held at the Genisis Hope Centre, Moore Monyela, project manager of Thutobophelo said the primary objective of the learnership programme is to develop Ancillary Health Care practitioners who will actively engage as health promoters, health providers and health networkers within the context of community development.
She extended appreciation to the Hibiscus Hospital Group for granting this opportunity to the learners and fully funding the project, including the stipend from the company’s budget.

“We also thank Genesis for use of their facilities for the duration of the training,”Monyela added.
Hibiscus Hospital Group CEO, Richard Mills said by equipping these young individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills, the medical facility aims to empower them to make a significant impact on the health and well-being of their communities.
“We look forward to hosting the students at our facilities for their clinical hours which means they will be joining our family,” said Mills.
He reminded the students that nursing and community health care is not just a job, but it is about giving compassionate care to those who need it, which is their purpose in life.

Sibusiso Chiya of HWSETA explained that they will be evaluating and verifying the training, ensuring that the learners are equipped with all the necessary skills as per the mandate.
He said the course is 156 credits of which 30% will be theory and 70% practical.
“We will monitor the programme and visit the facilities in which they will be placed. After the training has been completed, we will request results from the facilitator in order for us to endorse them and award them the certificates, if all requirements have been met.
Chiya congratulated the learners and wished them the best in their training.
The learners signed their contracts and received welcome packs.
