Ugu District celebrates top five matriculants
The top five performing matriculants of 2021 were honoured at a special awards day held at Port Shepstone High last Friday.
For the third consecutive year now, Ugu District has ranked number one within the province, with a 80.4% pass rate.
This comes after the National Senior Certificate examination results were officially released last week.
Despite the immense challenges the 2021 matric cohort faced, they somehow managed to push through especially with the support of educators and family.
The top five performing matriculants of 2021 were honoured at a special awards day held at Port Shepstone High last Friday.

Attendees included the MEC for Social Development, Ugu District deputy mayor, education specialists within the district, circuit managers, principals, educators and of course, the district’s top achievers.
In first place was Iman Khan of Port Shepstone Secondary. Iman also placed second in KwaZulu-Natal and first in the country’s quintile four schools.
Second place went to Devanarayanan (Dev) Anilkumar of Port Shepstone High. His phenomenal results also saw him achieve fifth place in the province.
Dev was the dux of school last year and has managed to produce seven distinctions, with an incredible 99% in mathematics.

He credits good time management skills as the secret to his success.
Dev plans on studying medicine at UCT and the school wishes him everything of the best for his future endeavours.
Port Shepstone High expressed how extremely proud it is of him.
Both Dev and Iman were unable attend the event as they were at the provincial awards, held at La Mercy that same day.
Third place saw a tie between Laikah Sishi of Buhlebethu High and Zimasa Sigede of Merlewood Secondary.

Both learners were thrilled with their results.
Laikah is unable to attend university this year and therefore plans to find a job in the meantime.
Meanwhile, Zimasa has wowed herself and her school, with 7As and an aggregate of 93.6%. She will be attending the University of Pretoria where she will study medicine.
Merlewood Secondary in its entirety achieved a pass rate of 85.6%, with 49 learners achieving bachelor passes.
The school also wishes all its learners the best in their endeavours as they proceed into the real world.

Finally, in fourth place was Zuhair Sheik of Roseville Secondary School. He too obtained seven distinctions and will go on to pursue medicine, hopefully at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
These outstanding learners were each presented with laptops and certificates to congratulate them for their hard work.
