Helping heal the world

Brave, bold and resilient – these are the most common words used by locals to describe Kwanele Madondo, an Umzinto resident who has overcome physical and emotional trauma to help heal others.

In September, Kwanele made headlines when he announced that he will be starting a new reality show for KZN called The Scars, in which people would be able to share their stories about how they obtained physical and/or emotional scars and would have Kwanele and his team at hand to offer love, support and motivation.
He also hoped that he would be able to help the youngsters in his community, and last week he took the first steps in achieving this goal.

The Scars team visited Umzinto Primary School and put on an entertaining and informative show for the learners.
Emotions ran high for all present when Kwanele opened up about his personal scars and how he was a learner in the same school when he became the victim of a house fire many years ago. It was also the school his late sisters attended before they died in the fire.
“I went there to motivate the learners and show them my scars,” he said.
“I told them about my teachers being so supportive and always checked in on me, and this is what I am offering to these learners as well. No matter what they are facing, I want them to know that I will always be there to help them just like I had help.”

Kwanele initiated this school programme out of love, and said that being with the learners on the day reminded him of what it was like when his siblings were alive and they were all in school together.
“My messages shared were from my heart and soul, and after commencing with this school programme, I feel free at last.”
The teachers were also excited to see Kwanele return to the school and were grateful to have the ex-learner strive to change the lives of present learners.
When Kwanele showed the learners the physical scars on his body after the fire incident, one of the teachers even pointed that the burns on his back resemble angel wings.

“This is just one of the many signs as to why this young man will always be so special,” said the teacher.
Before departing, the Scars team had a little fun with the learners through song and dance, a skit and a performance by local artists Mc Exe and Mc Chicco.
