EFF demands services from Ugu

The Ugu District Municipality spokesperson, France Zama, had to accept a memorandum from the EFF during a protest last Thursday.

This was after the EFF, led by Secretary General Marshall Dlamini, marched to Ugu to hand over the memorandum to the Municipal Manager, Vela Mazibuko.

The party members came out in their numbers as they marched from Dick King Square to hand over their grievances to Ugu.

Normally, the protesters would have stood in front of the offices to hand over the memorandum to be signed, but the EFF requested that whoever accepted it must come up to their stage.An argument then ensued for over an hour between the EFF and the municipality.

Eventually, Zama and other municipal officials went up, signed, and accepted it.Some of the EFF’s grievances included the supply of water in the district.Reading the memorandum, Protest Convenor Khethiwe Buthelezi said the crisis in Ugu is not a minor issue but a crime against humanity.

”The municipality has failed to provide service delivery across the district.” Buthelezi said among their demands are that Ugu terminate all water tanker contracts because they do no justice to the people and that Ugu comes up with a solution to provide water to every household.

”We demand that Ugu clears the accounts of all pensioners, and this must be prioritised. We also want Ugu to invest in water and sanitation infrastructure.”

She said Ugu must take action against water resources corruption and investigate all expenditures and wasteful expenditures.

”These expenditures are not directed to the supply of water but to their pockets, and they need to stop it.”

Buthelezi said that by June 2025, they want all the informal settlements to have proper flushing toilets.

According to Zama, the municipality acknowledged receipt of the memorandum and that it will consider some of the grievances.
