‘Help, I have a black mamba in my bedroom’
The coast's snake catcher has had a busy time of late.

Snake catcher Sarel van der Merwe has had a busy time of late.
Of course, doing what Sarel does best: catching snakes of all shapes and sizes.
His latest big catch was another feisty black mamba.
Sarel received a phone call for help from residents in Mtwalume.
On arrival, Sarel began to search for the black mamba under a bed.
But with little luck under the bed, he opened a cupboard, only to be greeted by a giant rat.
On following the trail of the rat, Sarel found the mamba behind a cupboard in the bedroom. “He is a big boy, measuring about three metres,” said Sarel, unfazed by its length or thickness.
Before releasing the mamba, Sarel and his brave partner, Emma-Jane Cox, brought the large, beautiful reptile to the Herald office, to the staff’s horror.
Sarel caught another black mamba in Mtwalume a week ago. The snake was found between some retaining blocks with his lunch, a rat.
He also recently caught a green mamba in a kitchen in Oslo Beach and then another in a garden behind some pots in Sea Park.
