SARDINE RUN 2024: Bathing banned at certain beaches as thousands of dolphins and birds follow sardines

Locals and visitors flocked to the coastline to catch a glimpse of this spectacular ocean show.

At first light this morning the KZN Sharks Board’s meshing team from Glenmore reported a strong smell of sardines and, shortly afterwards, said that there were at least 3 000 common dolphins off the lighthouse area at Port Edward.
Thousands of gannets were seen ‘raining’ from the sky while the humpback whales were spotted breaching.
Thousands of birds following the shoals of silver fish.
This activity has now made its way through to Ramsgate, stretching from Port Edward.
Wayne Harrison, Area Operations Manager at KZN Sharks Board said the ‘Greatest Shoal on Earth’ was now well and truly in local waters.
“The views are spectacular and this is the moment in time that you want to be out there viewing the sardine run,” he said.
Bathing has been banned from Port Edward through to Umtentweni.
However, bathing is open at the following beaches:
  • Southport
  • Sunwich Port
  • Banana beach
  • Umzumbe
  • Hibberdene
  • Karridene
  • Winklespruit
  • Warner Beach
  • Amanzimtoti main beach
