‘Code Like a Girl’ programme helps broaden horizons
Some of the pupils learnt to use a computer for the first time in their lives.
South Africa’s cellphone communications giant, Vodacom SA, recently invested in a youth skills development programme for scores of Umzumbe rural school girls.
Through this newly launched programme, called ‘Code Like a Girl’, Vodacom partnered with the Department of Education and Umzumbe local municipality to train 90 school girls from 30 rural schools.
They were awarded with computer certificates at a function held at Sibanini Community Hall.
Nombuso Mabaso from the KZN Department of Education MEC’s Office thanked Vodacom.
Company executives handed over graduation certificates to the girls who completed the three-week Vocacom-sponsored computer skills development programme, which is part of Vodacom’s corporate social responsibility programme.
Umzumbe municipality chief whip Sibongiseni Cele welcomed the partnership and encouraged the girls to grab such opportunities with both hands.
The girls were able to delve into IT opportunities and learn about changing their lives through education and skills.

The girls were exposed to computer and internet training to explore opportunities in information technology fields like potentially becoming engineers, developers, decoders and entrepreneurs.
Credit was also given to Sibusiso Nxumalo (teacher development) for her hard work in making it all happen.
