Grannies’ Walk boasts rich history and bright future
Join Rotary for a day that celebrates the incredible women and grannies on our coast.
There’s a buzz of excitement ahead of the annual Rotary Grannies’ Walk set to take place at St Mike’s Beach on Women’s Day (Friday).
This year’s event, which starts at 08:00 for 08:30, promises to be as memorable as ever, drawing inspiration from its storied past.
The Grannies’ Walk boasts a long and illustrious history, with a particularly memorable event in 2002.
Norman Edwards, alongside women’s winner Annette Jackson, crossed the finish line at a cracking pace to notch up his tenth win.
At the age of 80, Norman demonstrated incredible determination and spirit, having secured second place the previous year.
Annette Jackson, who continues to participate and inspire, won the women’s category back then and is now gearing up for her 23rd walk with the Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast.
The 2002 event saw 190 entrants walk from St. Michaels to Uvongo and back via Saints Walk.
This was a significant increase from the first event in 1983, which had only 20 participants.
Fast forward to 2024, and the excitement around the Grannies’ Walk continues to grow, now attracting hundreds of entries annually.
With a tasty breakfast and fantastic entertainment lined up, this year’s event is set to be unforgettable.
“Meeting up with old friends and getting an opportunity to stretch the legs in such a beautiful and safe area is a highlight I am looking forward to,” said Annette.
Entry is R100 per adult, children under 12 free.
