Massive python found at Renishaw farm

The female python had a small wound and was taken to Scottburgh Veterinary Clinic for a full health check.

The Crocworld Conservation Centre team came to the rescue of local residents and assisted with the removal of a 3.8m Southern African python at a Renishaw farm last week.

Animal curator Busani Mthiyane received the call from farm workers in the area who had noted the ‘very large snake’ on site.

He and his team went out and located the female python in no time.

A small wound was found on the snake, and it was taken to Dr Jonathan Clark of Scottburgh Veterinary Clinic, who sedated her, cleaned her wound and did a full health check.

Crocworld’s manager, James Wittstock, said they initially thought the snake was gravid (pregnant), which is particularly significant as this snake species shows some maternal instinct, caring for the hatched snakes for the first couple of weeks.

“She has recovered well and is now due for release into a suitable environment this week.”

The python is 3.8 metres long.
