Three die in house fire

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said Ezinqoleni police have opened cases of murder and arson.

A house fire claimed the lives of three of the same family members in KwaNyuswa area near Izingolweni on Monday morning last week.

Hloniphile Nzama, Mbalenhle Nzama and Princess Ngongoma died, and five children were injured.

A family member, Wakhe Nzama, alleges the incident was an attack on the family.

He said whatever was used to set the house on fire was thrown on top of the house and through the windows.

Nzama added that five of the children were pushed out of the windows by their mothers, who were inside with them.

Three of the victims are still in hospital, and two have been discharged.

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said Ezinqoleni police have opened cases of murder and arson.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality acting spokesperson Nomusa Zulu said fire and disaster officials received a call about the incident in Ward 34.

“On arrival, the house was already ablaze. On assessment, it was established that three fatalities had occurred; they were trapped by the flames and smoke. The injured were children aged between three and 10. All were transported to hospital for medical attention.”

Nzama said his brother, Thulani Nzama, the owner of the house, was shot dead by three men in broad daylight outside his home. His funeral was held two weeks ago.

“We were still trying to figure out why my brother was killed or who would have wanted him dead because he had no enemies; now this happens.”

RNM mayor Zodwa Mzindle extended condolence to the family and the affected community, committing to work with law enforcement to ensure that if any crime was perpetrated, justice must prevail.
