‘Brahs’ bring in bras for charity
Charities like ILoveBoobies play a crucial role in ensuring that women, especially those in underserved communities, have access to these vital screenings and support services.
What does it take to be a ‘brah’? Donate a bra, of course. A collaborative effort between the Beekman Group and its wider community has culminated in the donation of over 850 gently-used bras to women in underserved communities.
From September to October 2024, the Port Shepstone holiday and leisure giant rallied together to support breast cancer awareness.
The response to the ‘Be a Brah, Donate a Bra’ campaign – a clever slogan conceived by the industrious IT department – was overwhelming, thanks to the generosity and compassion of the staff and the general public.
The Port Shepstone head office collected 320 bras, while Beekman resorts around the country contributed a further 552.
Of those, 142 came from Formosa Bay Resort in Plettenberg Bay.
In total, 872 bras were shipped to ILoveBoobies, a South African organisation that aims to provide free breast examinations to South African women for whom such medical services are prohibitively expensive or inaccessible.
“It is a remarkable achievement that will directly impact the lives of countless women,” says the Beekman Group’s campaign initiator, Chris Stapleton. “These bras will be cleaned, tagged, and redistributed to women in need as part of their life-saving screening programmes.”
Breast cancer is a disease that affects millions worldwide. Early detection through regular screenings significantly improves survival rates. Charities like ILoveBoobies play a crucial role in ensuring that women, especially those in underserved communities, have access to these vital screenings and support services.
ILoveBoobies’ Philippa Brinkmann appreciates the work done. “While our core mission is to provide essential health screenings for women in underserved communities, a ‘new’ bra offers women a symbol of care and support, which we hope makes them feel seen and appreciated,” she said.
