United in fight against GBV
Community leaders, including pastors, councillors, law enforcement and others took part in the Umzinto march.
Men, women and children united last week in the fight against gender-based violence.
A march was held in Umzinto, starting at the Sasol petrol station and continuing through town to the Umzinto town hall.
This was done after Umdoni mayor, Mbali Cele-Luthuli, called for unity.
Community leaders, including pastors, councillors, law enforcement and others, were present and took part in the peaceful march.
This was followed by a time of prayer at the town hall, where awareness was made about the effects of gender-based violence and HIV/Aids.
There were prayers for communities to be free from all violence, especially against women and children.
“We have stood together to speak for the voiceless, the vulnerable and emotionally scarred individuals who have been victims of gender-based violence in our communities and country at large,” said the mayor.
To show support for this initiative, all males in attendance signed a pledge in the presence of Magistrate Nonhlanhla Mzila, committing to always protect women and children.
The men and boys were urged to educate one another on how gender-based violence is slowly but surely killing communities.
