Conservation centre manager bids farewell
He started off as a reptile curator at the centre in August 2019 and, a year later, became the centre manager.
James Wittstock (29), the centre manager at Scottburgh’s Crocworld Conservation Centre, will be saying goodbye to the mid-South Coast as he relocates to Mozambique in January.
He will be taking on the role of a quality process manager at Murrimo Macadamias in Gurue, Mozambique.
James is excited about the new adventure but said he will definitely miss the people and the park.
He started off as a reptile curator at the centre in August 2019 and, a year later, became the centre manager.
James took on this role during one of tourism’s most challenging times (Covid-19 and the lockdown) and was able to keep the ship above water.
“We had to close the centre for 145 consecutive days, but during this time, all the staff stayed on, and we were able to come to work to care for the animals every day. We have built an incredible culture at the centre – there’s a great group of people here, without whom things simply wouldn’t get done,” he said.
After smooth sailing, once again, James explained that everything from the way they look after the animals to the animals they have at the centre has evolved, with many exciting projects undertaken during this time.
“We have a number of new species on site, including two new crocodilian species, with refurbishments and revamps to enhance the centre for animals and visitors alike.”
“We also have an incredible record with regards to our animal care and rehabilitation.”
Before leaving, James thanked the staff and visitors of the centre, as well as KZN Wildlife, FreeMe, local vets and conservationists.
