Heroic boys save pensioner
The brothers reacted after a fire broke out at their complex in Hibberdene.
Two young boys from Hibberdene, Schyler (10) and Jeandre (11) Lubbe, have become heroes and are recognised by Pick n Pay for their bravery.
According to their father, Johan Lubbe, there was a fire at their complex in August last year.
He said they heard loud bangs, and when he went upstairs to check on his children, one of them told him that there was an explosion in the complex.

“We then started evacuating because the house next door and ours was going to be next to catch fire. While we were busy with that and trying to grab the fire hose, Schyler and Jeandre remembered the old woman next door, who is in a wheelchair.”
He said the boys then quickly went to her house, grabbed her by her arms and helped her to safety.
His wife then drove off somewhere safe with the children and the pensioner.
“She was upset, shocked and emotional; the boys sat with her and tried to comfort her.”

Lubbe said they were lucky they didn’t lose anything, but there was smoke, and it didn’t feel safe at that time, so they left and returned the next morning.
Pick n Pay store manager Sonja Engelbrecht said the boys’ father contacted her through the Pick n Pay School Club.
She said they are proud of the boys.
“I would say it takes a man to be that brave, but in this case, it took boys to go and assist an elderly woman who could not help herself.”
She said the club sent certificates to show appreciation, and the store gave them gift bags to say well done.
