Keep a lookout for a woolly-necked storks

These birds are often seen in natural wetland habitats such as in savanna and grassland, including rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, water-holes, lagoons or dams.

Residents are asked to keep an eye out for blue or black rings on woolly-necked storks.

It’s part of a University of KwaZulu-Natal research project, and the public is asked to help in locating storks with colour rings.

The research is on the birds’ movement and survival.

Jonah Gula, who is collecting the data, thanked everyone for their continued sightings of colour-ringed storks.

Rings are best read with binoculars or with a regular camera – not by a cellphone.

Report the ring code and location of the stork by contacting Gula via WhatsApp on 071 1900604
