Lifesaving clubs get ‘lifeline boost’ from Lotto
South Coast lifesaving clubs received essential equipment.

Twelve lifesaving clubs stretching from Glenmore Beach to Umhlanga main beach and as far inland as Ladysmith benefited from crucial Lotto funding this holiday season.
Lifesaving KwaZulu-Natal, a dedicated voluntary organisation providing water safety and surf rescue services through its affiliated clubs, was awarded Lotto funding to support their mission.
This funding enabled the organisation to supply local voluntary lifesaving clubs with essential rescue equipment ahead of the bustling festive season, as well as specialised gear for lifesaving sports.
Troye Brown, the chairperson of Lifesaving KwaZulu-Natal, said equipment such as rescue boards, patrol and duty flags, torpedo buoys, and duty bunting, will keep beachgoers safe.
The need for vigilance is highlighted by the recent tragedy of 13 drownings, 10 of which occurred in KwaZulu-Natal. Each incident took place at non-designated bathing areas without lifeguards present.
“We urge all South Africans to prioritise safety at the beach and pool,” says Brown. “Simple precautions can save lives.”
Brown urges the public to adhere to the following 11 water safety tips:
1. Swim only at beaches patrolled by lifeguards.
2. Always stay between the red and yellow flags indicating safe bathing zones.
3. Avoid swimming if under the influence of alcohol.
4. Parents should maintain constant supervision of their children near water.
5. Protect your skin with sunscreen and stay sun-smart.
6. Follow lifeguards’ instructions at all times.
7. Always swim with a buddy; never swim alone.
8. In an emergency, remain calm and signal for help by raising your hand.
9. If someone is in trouble, alert lifeguards immediately or seek assistance.
10. Be mindful of weather conditions, rip currents, and tide changes.
11. Familiarise yourself with beach safety signage.
Lifesaving KwaZulu-Natal remains committed to its mission to safeguard communities and visitors along the province’s shores.
“With this funding, we are not only equipping our clubs but also reinforcing our commitment to water safety,” says Brown.
“We urge everyone to respect the ocean, follow safety guidelines, and work with our lifeguards to make holiday seasons safe and enjoyable for all.”
