Temples prepare for Kavady festival

On the first day of the festival a flag is hoisted at the temple, this marks the beginning of the 10 day fast and observance of the festival.

During Thai Poosam Kavady, a Hindu religious festival, the Hindu deity, Lord Muruga, is worshipped. The festival is one of the biggest on the South African Indian festival calendar.

The Umbango Sri Siva Soobramoniar Temple invites all to their annual Thai Poosam Kavady festival from February 2 to 16. The flag hoisting will commence on Sunday, February 2, with hawan starting at 10:00.

Daily obayams will start at 18:00 on weekdays, and on Saturday, February 8 and 15 at 15:00 and on Sunday, February 9 at 15:00. The temple’s chariot will proceed throughout the districts of Port Shepstone on Sunday, February 9, from 08:30. All Kavady bookings will be open to devotees from flag hoisting day.

Thai Poosam Kavady will be observed on Tuesday, February 11, with hawan starting at 08:00.

The public Kavady will be held on Sunday, February 16, with hawan starting at 05:30. The main and public Kavady will take place at the Short Street grounds.

All devotees who wish to take part in the daily obayams are requested to contact any of the executive members of the temple. Supper and prasad will be served daily.

* The Port Shepstone Tamil Association will observe its annual Thai Pongal prayer on Tuesday, January 14, at 06:00.

The annual Thai Poosam Kavady festival will be conducted from February 1, with daily obayams at 18:00.

The temple’s chariot will visit the neighbourhoods on Saturday, February 8, from 08:00.

The main Kavady prayer will be held on Tuesday, February 11, at 08:00.

* The Umzinkuluwana Shri Siva Soobramoniar Temple will observe its 85th Thai Poosam Kavady from Sunday, February 2, with flag hoisting at 13:00.

The main Kavady will be held at the temple on Tuesday, February 11, from 07:00.

The public Kavady will be held from the NPC grounds on February 16 at 07:00.
