Ugu bags second place in KZN

Overall 10 638 candidates wrote examinations and 9 758 passed.

In the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, Ugu district placed second in KZN and sixth nationally.

In 2023, Ugu was also the runner-up as Umkhanyakude district snatched first place, which Ugu had held for four consecutive years.

The Department of Education’s acting district director, Nkosinathi Madida, said results improved from 89.5% in 2023 to 91.7% in 2024.

“Bachelor passes improved from 49.3% in 2023 to 60% in 2024. Schools at 100% performance improved from 13 in 2023 to 26 in 2024.”

Madida said it is pleasing to see that the education system is showing maturity and stability.

Also, he said that it’s an immense sense of pride to have consistently shown improvement over four years in both quantity and quality.

“We join hands with the country in congratulating the class of 2024 for staying at school over 12 years and the good performance they displayed.”

Madida added that they are also proud that schools in Quintile 1-3 (no fee schools) are now performing at the same level as schools in Quintile 4-5(fee paying schools).

“The district had 132 schools writing the NSC, 1 863 invigilators and managed 155 244 answer scripts. Despite inclement weather, there were no challenges experienced.”

Overall, 10 638 candidates wrote examinations, and 9 758 passed.

Madida thanked officials, teachers for their selfless sacrifice, SGBs and teacher unions.
