The department looks forward to 2025 to accelerate academic excellence

The Department of Education in the Ugu district has announced the top five learners in the 2024 National Senior Certificate examinations.

They are Talha Hasan Musa of Port Shepstone Islamic School (1st), Muhammad Saleh Zaheer of Port Shepstone Islamic School (2nd), Busisiwe Lubanyana of Thobigunya High in KwaXolo (3rd), Tonia Ojolimi Ayanda Dwayisa of Khathi High in KwaQwabe in Umzumbe Municipality (4th) and Jaiden Govender of Port Shepstone Secondary (5th).

Talha Hasan Musa obtained A symbols in eight subjects: Physical Science, Life Sciences, Accounting, Life Orientation, Mathematics, Arabic second additional language, Afrikaans and English.

Talha will study Computer Science.

Muhammad Saleh Zaheer obtained A symbols in Physical Science, Life Sciences, Accounting, Life Orientation, Mathematics, Arabic second additional language, Afrikaans and English.

His dream is to become a Chartered Accountant.

Busisiwe Lubanyana of Thobigunya High in KwaXolo was invited to the 2024 matric results function at the Albert Luthuli ICC in Durban, where she was announced as the top achiever against adversity in Ugu.

Busisiwe achieved A symbols in English, IsiZulu, Accounting, Tourism, Business Studies, Mathematical Literacy and Life Orientation.

She wants to be a Chartered Accountant and has specific universities where she would like to pursue her studies.

However, she said she has received an offer from the University of Johannesburg, one of her preferred institutions.

She said she hardly slept as she was studying so she could get the best results.

“I dedicated myself a lot. I made sure that I spent all my time studying. My family and teachers were supportive, and that gave me courage.”

The Herald was unable to reach Tonia Ojolimi Ayanda Dwayisa at the time of going to press.

Jaiden Govender obtained A symbols in Mathematics, Accounting, Physical Science, Life Science, English, Afrikaans and Life Orientation.

He will study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pretoria.

The department’s acting director, Nkosinathi Madida, said the performance is owed to all involved in ensuring that learners in the district receive quality public education.

“We want to express our appreciation to all officials and teachers for their selfless sacrifice working over the weekends and holidays, the support from SGBs and teacher unions.”

Madida said the department looks forward to 2025 to accelerate academic excellence.
