Illegal strike halts refuse removal

Residents and businesses are urged to keep their refuse inside their properties until the municipality advises of resumption of collection.

Umdoni Municipality had an interruption of its waste collection services on Monday this week after an ‘illegal’ strike by employees belonging to the South African Municipal Workers Union.

This strike was considered illegal as no notice was given to the employer prior to the strike, resulting in the interruption of this service.

“The municipality condemns such anarchy by these employees who seek to derail the municipality’s continuous efforts to instil stability in this institution and adequately service the residents and business community of Umdoni,” said acting municipal manager Nhlakanipho Kumalo.

Residents and businesses are urged to keep their refuse inside their properties until the municipality advises of resumption of collection.

As of Tuesday morning (January 21), there was no update on the matter.

Concerned residents are also encouraged to check the Umdoni Municipality News Facebook page, where updates are often posted.
