No python too big for Sarel

The Southern African Python (Python natalensis) is the largest snake in Southern Africa.

Snake catcher Sarel van der Merwe had a ‘big three metre’ start to the year!

He received a phone call for help from a company laying fibre cables in the Munster area.

“A Southern African python was playing ‘hide-and-seek’ in a bush where the fibre team was busy laying cable,” he said.

Once again, Sarel saved the day and rescued the solid and heavily built python measuring three metres in length.

Sarel stressed that the Southern African python is protected in Southern Africa as vulnerable in the latest South African Red Data Book and may not be captured or killed.

In South Africa, this particular python is the only one of its kind; a very large and bulky snake that cannot be easily confused with other snakes.

Sarel thanked a local farmer for allowing him to release the python on his farm.

He also thanked the staff from the fibre company for their help and for caring enough about ‘this beauty’ to call him.

If you need a snake removed this summer, contact Sarel on 082 6831604.
