‘Keep moving’ says Dave Millar (80)

In 2023, Dave achieved his 9th Dan black belt in karate at the International Chu Jin Karate Championships held in Cape Town.

Karate teacher Hanshi Dave Millar turned 80 years old on Monday last week.

Friends and family celebrated his milestone at The Grove Restaurant and Beach Bar in Margate.

In 2023, Dave Millar achieved his 9th Dan black belt in karate at the International Chu Jin Karate Championships held in Cape Town.

The 9th Dan is the second highest level for instructors of the martial art, and only the most committed make it to this stage.

Hanshi Dave started training in 1965 and taught countless children and adults the art of karate, but it is his referee’s career that makes him one of the most experienced referees South Africa has ever seen.

“It was a great privilege to celebrate Dave’s birthday with him and his wife, Hannelie. Dave has changed so many lives on the South Coast and directed so many youngsters in the right direction. He is a legend,” said his good friend, Robin Petterson.

A grand birthday cake for Dave Millar.

Hanshi Dave still trains daily and remains a member at Superbodies Margate.

He is also a member of the World Karate Federation Ugu karate region.

His secret… Love life and keep moving!
