Johan Barnard clocks 500th parkrun in Port Edward
The Beaver Creek parkrun event director, Simphiwe Mngwengwe, and the team of friendly volunteers were thanked for making Johan Barnard's 500th parkrun milestone so special.
Johan Barnard from Pietermaritzburg came all the way to Port Edward last Saturday to complete his 500th parkrun at Beaver Creek Coffee Estate.
“We are currently on a week’s holiday in Umzumbe, but always plan our weekends around parkrun. We enjoy visiting different parkrun events whenever we can, and we decided to do my 500th parkrun at Beaver Creek parkrun,” says Johan.
It was also the 27th parkrun at Beaver Creek, which was a parkrun number that Johan needed for one of the parkrun challenges called the Wilson index.
It took him more than a decade to achieve his 500 finishes. He ran his first parkrun on August 8, 2015.
“I am forever grateful to my friend Mike Lombard, who told me about parkrun,” he says.
At the time, he was unfit and had some health issues. Thanks to parkrun, he got fit again and went on to do many fun runs and half marathons.
“It was such a privilege to have been hosted by the friendly team of volunteers at Beaver Creek for the third time. That also goes for the volunteers at so many other parkrun venues that we have visited on my journey to this milestone.”
Johan thanked the Beaver Creek parkrun event director, Simphiwe Mngwengwe and the team of friendly volunteers and everyone who made his 500th parkrun milestone so special.
“A big thank you also goes to Beaver Creek management for providing me with a breakfast and coffee on the house.”
