Ray Nkonyeni Municipality workers’ February backpay delayed

An agreement to four months backpay and upgrading workers to category 5 was signed on January 31.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality workers might not get their first two months of backpay in February as per the agreement signed in January.

In a letter, the municipal manager, Khetha Zulu, said that there has been delays in negotiations and workers will be paid no later than March 7.

There is confusion as to what negotiations have been going on after the signing of the agreement because both the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) and RNM confirmed that they had agreed on four months backpay and upgrading workers to category 5.

In an ongoing meeting at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre this afternoon (Friday), SAMWU’s provincial organiser Menzi Luthuli reported to workers that Zulu has called a meeting on Monday, but till date  challenges have risen – such as not all workers are legible to get the backpay.

Luthuli said they intend to meet with the RNM mayor Zodwa Mzindle.

Workers went on strike for over three months because of issues related to backpay and gradings, which crippled service delivery on the South Coast.
