Hibberdene police have opened two inquest dockets after the bodies of two men were found after heavy rains in Mtwalume.

The body of Sthembiso Mbutho (57) from Qoloqolo, who was reported missing last week Wednesday, was found near a low-level bridge at the Mtwalume River last week Friday.

According to police, while a search was being conducted for Mbutho, they also found the body of Mzwakhe Dlungele (65), an Induna in the area.

Umzumbe Fire and Rescue was on scene and removed the bodies from the river, which were then handed over to the Port Shepstone Medico Legal Mortuary.

An electricity pole fell on top of a house in Mtwalume.

Umzumbe Municipality’s spokesperson, Sabelo Ncwane, said that the heavy rains also damaged some areas in Umzumbe from Tuesday this week into Wednesday morning.

“Mudslides, flooded houses, damaged roads and dead animals were reported, but fortunately, we have not received any reports of injured people or deaths.”
