JUST IN: Work on Port Shepstone bridge starts early next week
An application for toll fees (only for the offramps) to be exempted has been forwarded to the Minister of Transport.
The official closure of the Mzimkhulu River Bridge will be on Monday, March 17 at 15:00.
This comes after a meeting earlier today between the relevant stakeholders, councillors and Department of Transport regrading the repairs to the Mzimkhulu bridge.
The following has been reported back by Clr Leon Garbade, DA Caucus Chair of Ward 12 Ray Nkonyeni Municipality from the meeting:
– Pier 2 (column 2) has settled and rotated, repairs to complete structure, repairs to other piers due to foundation failure. Shifted 150mm towards the ocean.
– Deck spans 2 and 3 will be rehabilitated.
– Further analysis of the remaining piers (columns) will be reviewed and repaired.
– The Lower Sugar Mill road as alternate route is acknowledged as not an alternative and all councillors agreed that the only viable alternative remains the N2 Toll.
– The KZN MEC for Transport Siboniso Duma has applied to the Transport Minister for exemption of toll fees only for the offramps. The ‘central channels’ from North to South will not be exempted.
“I have offered to assist MEC Duma with the motivation for this. Only the minister can issue this exemption. I requested for oversight rights and privileges of the project as well as regular progress reports once the construction starts,” said Clr Garbade.
