Brave man saves pensioner from drowning

He used a pole to pull him out of the raging waters.

A Good Samaritan has been hailed a hero for saving a pensioner from drowning in a river in Port Edward recently.

Sandile Mchithwa, a vet assistant who lives in the Wild Coast, saved Nkibide Mzobe, who was crossing the river.

The Wild Coast and Port Edward areas experienced heavy rainfall on April 6. At about 16:00, Mchithwa was sorting out his livestock in his front yard when he noticed an old man walking across the river with a stick.

“Water was flowing fast in the river; I saw that he was in trouble and ran to help him. Once I reached the river embankment, I noticed that he was further in. I went in carrying a pole and used it to pull him out from the raging waters. He sustained some injuries and was taken to hospital and later discharged,” he said.

Mchithwa works as a vet assistant at the Transkei Animal Welfare Initiative.

Port Edward resident Alida Stofberg said he is honest and hard-working.

“He also recently rescued two kittens. He volunteers for the animal welfare initiative, a non-profit organisation, which focuses on providing basic companion animal health care in 16 rural communities in the former Transkei region, where veterinary services are scarce,” said Alida.
