Clean-up programme creates jobs

Participants were taken from V-Section in Umkomaas, as well as Mthethwa's Settlement and Amahlongwa.

eThekwini Municipality recently funded an NGO known as ‘BEST’ to run an educational and practical programme in informal settlements and rural areas.

The objective was to teach locals to keep their settlements clean and tidy while providing local employment.

Participants were taken from V-Section in Umkomaas, as well as Mthethwa’s Settlement and Amahlongwa.

A programme introduction meeting was held at the Naidooville soccer grounds and Kwamabuza Hall, where municipal officials relayed the programme to the community.

They were then enrolled into the programme and conducted the daily clean-up of streams, stormwater manholes and bush clearance in Mthethwa’s Settlement and Amahlongwa.

This resulted in over 120 participants being provided with jobs for a six to 12 month period.

Many community members showed interest in the programme and joined on the day.
