Top marks for Scottburgh High
The Ugu District achieved a 91.7% pass rate in the 2024 NSC exams and placed second in the province.
The Department of Education celebrated the achievements of schools in the Ugu District at the 2024 NSC Excellence Awards last week.
The event was held at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre and hosted teachers, officials and senior management of the department.
Here, it was announced that Scottburgh High was the top school in the district in the Quintile 5 category.
The Ugu District achieved a 91.7% pass rate in the 2024 NSC exams and placed second in the province.
Out of 10 638 candidates, 9 758 passed, with over 6 000 obtaining Bachelor passes.
The district exceeded the provincial Mathematics target with a 78% pass rate and attained 85% in Physical Sciences. All circuits achieved above 80%, with 25 schools attaining a 100% pass rate.
Among the guests were Mbongiseni Mazibuko (deputy director-general for Curriculum GET), Thami Mbanjwa (chief director from the office of the HoD), Thembelihle Gumede (chief director for district operations), Sindi Zakuza-Njakazi (chief director for curriculum management), Nkosinathi Madadi (acting district director for Ugu) and Bongiwe Ntombela (district director for Harry Gwala).
Madadi welcomed guests, stating that Ugu is a disciplined district.
“We pride ourselves on having played a significant role in stabilising the system. We have also been able to bridge the divide between rural and urban school performance. To all teachers, thank you for your selfless sacrifice,” he said.
Mbongiseni Mazibuko congratulated the district on its 91.7% pass rate and urged continued focus on literacy, numeracy, and boosting Bachelor passes to ensure that learners are able to compete globally.
