Dog stuck in snare rescued in Tweni

The South Coast Anti-Snaring Group, the Lower South Coast SPCA and residents teamed up with the goal to find the snared dog.

A dog caught in a snare was luckily rescued from a farm in Tweni on Monday last week.

The Saunders brothers, Ryan and Craig from the South Coast Anti-snare Group, began looking for the dog in the bush after a Tweni resident reported that they kept hearing what sounded like a dog howling in the valley.

The search started around 10:00, with officers from the Lower South Coast SPCA walking from one side of the farm in an attempt to locate where the crying was coming from.

The group was also joined by Tweni residents Lee and Don Murray.

“Craig and I had two-way radios, so we all split up to cover as much bush as possible,” said Ryan.

Ryan said the search continued for another three or so hours before the dog, tangled in a snare, was spotted by one of the SPCA staff.

The dog was carefully leashed, and the snare removed from around its neck. It was taken to the SPCA premises for further care.

Ryan praised the SPCA staff for going the extra mile and being highly dedicated to their jobs.

“I am so relieved it was a happy ending. The SPCA staff deserve great credit; they were so incredibly kind,” said Lee.

Craig, founder of the group, said they spent a total of six hours on the farm, and to their horror found and removed a total of 18 snares.

He said this particular farm has become a big problem over the years.

“We have roughly removed about 470 snares from this farm since 2020,” he added.
