Repairs start on Mzimkhulu bridge and P464

Work on the Mzimkhulu river bridge (R102) and P464 Sugar Mill has started.

Construction is currently active on the Sugarmill Road (P464 ), between the low-level bridge towards the old sugar mill, and the Mzimkhulu River bridge (R102).

The P464 towards the old sugar mill was closed to traffic after heavy rain caused an embankment to collapse four weeks ago.

A geo technical team submitted a report to the Department of Transport on May 9, which has started work at the site.

Sal Musa from the Albersville Ratepayers’ Association said motorists are advised to be careful as the barriers on both sides (near the low-level bridge and the old sugar mill) have been removed for the work to be carried out.

“An excavator and heavy-duty trucks are constantly busy on that section. Be advised that this section is still officially closed to traffic, though a lot of people are using the opportunity of an open road to travel. It’s not safe and we advise the general public to avoid it,” explained Sal.

Construction on the Mzimkhulu River bridge finally started last Saturday. The bridge is only open to pedestrians.

Clr Leon Garbade said it’s great that construction has started on the bridge that connects north and south. “There has been a lot of negativity around the inconvenience. We now need to give the construction teams a chance.”
