Roadshow questions and concerns addressed

The residents had yet another opportunity to comment on the proposed budget for the 2025/2026 financial year and to receive answers for the questions and concerns raised at the first meeting.

Part two of the Ward 10 and 15 Umdoni IDP and Draft Budget Roadshow came to an end at Park Rynie beach campsite last Tuesday.

The meeting (which had to take place after technical glitches forced the first meeting to come to abrupt end a week prior to this) had an even bigger turnout, with residents attending from Scottburgh, Pennington and Park Rynie.

The residents had yet another opportunity to comment on the proposed budget for the 2025/2026 financial year and to receive answers for the questions and concerns raised at the first meeting.

A few of the matters addressed by the mayor, Mbali Cele-Luthuli, are as follows:

– Scottburgh Town Hall: the municipality is still dealing with the people that are ‘illegally’ occupying the premises. The process for their removal has been delayed and once they are removed and given a place to stay in another area, the hall will once again be available for use.

– Refuse services increase: it was first mentioned that these service fees will increase by 100%. After much anger expressed by the community, meetings have been held and there was a suggestion of phasing this increase over three years with 33% increase each year.

– Roads: priority roads will be seen to for repairs. Storm water drainage also needs to be addressed. It was mentioned that about R10m for maintenance of roads was allocated.

– Beaches: there are plans in place to upgrade Scottburgh and Pennington beaches. There are also plans to see to the neglected water slide in Scottburgh and the beach building.

– Grass cutting: the mayor said that this service has been poor and noted that some of the service providers cut the grass and leave it behind. This matter will be addressed.

Other matters were raised by the community and the mayor advised everyone to contact the municipality’s customers service on WhatsApp on 082 9046165 or to contact ward councillors to take up any other matters.
