Body of missing Southbroom bather found
Formal identification of the man is being arranged with family in accordance with formal protocols.
The body of a man who went missing in the surf at Southbroom main beach last Thursday has been recovered.
Police divers, assisted by NSRI Shelly Beach found the man believed to be about 22-years-old on Monday this week.
He was reportedly conducting maintenance at the tidal pool and had gone for a swim when he was caught in rip currents.
He was swept out to sea despite efforts of Good Samaritans who tried to save him.
Volunteers from NSRI Station 20 Shelly Beach and Station 32 Port Edward were alerted at the time by Wolf Security and GP Security.
John Nicholas, NSRI Port Edward station commander, said the man’s colleagues, surfers and bystanders attempted to reach him in the surf zone, but he disappeared under water.
Both stations’ rescue swimmers responded and rescue craft Spirit of Surfski 7 was launched at Ramsgate Ski-Boat Club.
Officers from Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s Law Enforcement, Saps Water Policing and Diving Services, K9 Search and Rescue and Maser Security responded.
An extensive sea, air (conducted by a Saps’ drone) and shoreline search were carried out.
Formal identification of the man is being arranged with family in accordance with formal protocols.
An inquest docket has been opened by police.
