One month refuse bill credit for ratepayers

Some residents refused to pay the bill saying that they had to pay privately to get their waste removed.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) has given some residents a credit for one month on their refuse removal bill as a result of the municipal workers’ protest.

When the protest started last year, refuse was not collected in areas under RNM from November 2024 to January this year.

Residents complained that they were paying for a service that they did not receive.

Some residents refused to pay the bill saying that they had to pay privately to get their waste removed.

Now RNM has issued a notice saying that they will refund their customers in the form of credit for one month’s invoice for refuse collection into the ratepayers’ accounts by the end of the current financial year’s billing cycle of June 2025.

The areas that were severely affected and that will be refunded will be from Southbroom to Hibberdene including Gamalakhe.

The acting spokesperson for the municipality, Nomusa Zulu, said having considered all the facts regarding this issue, council resolved that although refuse collection was not provided for in some areas, the areas served by the South depot continued to receive service.

She said given the financial position of the municipality, council has therefore resolved to reimburse ratepayers, with the exclusion of areas serviced by the South depot.
