Supporters of World Ocean Day will be excited to hear that this year’s Ocean Festival is expected to be another epic event.
This highly anticipated festival will return to Scottburgh from June 5 to 8, and is fully embracing the World Ocean Day theme of Catalysing Action for Our Ocean & Climate with an action-packed line-up.
This includes activities such as clean-ups, talks, live music, sports and entertainment, with a new event this year – The Ocean Warriors National Series.
“We’re excited to welcome everyone back to Scottburgh to celebrate World Ocean Day as part of the third annual Ocean Festival,” said Barry Lewin, event organiser.
“This festival brings people together to celebrate our oceans through lifestyle, wellness, sport, education and community outreach.”
The Ocean Festival celebrates World Ocean Day by encouraging a human connection with the ocean through fun outdoor events and activities; talks about ocean health and raising awareness about its conservation and supporting ocean economies and local business in coastal towns by boosting tourism through the Ocean Festival events.
Lewin also spoke about the addition of the lifesaving competition, The Ocean Warriors National Series, to allow everyone the opportunity to support and celebrate ocean warriors.
Some of the festival highlights include the Leatherback Rum Aliwal Shoal Surfski Challenge which attracts several of the country’s top paddlers; beach, river, and reef clean-ups that bring all ages and communities together; as well as great entertainment from film screenings to live music.
The organiser said that winter in Scottburgh is one of the best times to visit, with the sub-tropical climate making this a year-round outdoor destination.
“Scottburgh beach, which has pilot Blue Flag status, is an exceptionally great beach for families, with a grassy embankment for relaxing, as well as great swimming, surfing, and diving.”
Also, attendees can look forward to several engaging outdoor events and activities suited for all ages.
Aside from the surfski challenge and lifesaving competition, there will be a school education workshop presented by South African Association for Marine Biological Research, ocean conservation science and research presentations, exclusive film screening at Premier Hotel Cutty Sark, Made for More adaptive surf therapy session, sunrise beach yoga and movement, live music and entertainment evening and clean-ups at Scottburgh main beach, Aliwal Shoal scuba diving reef clean-up and Mahlongwa River paddle and clean-up.
“”We encourage everyone to save the date for this year’s festival, which has something for everyone to enjoy while honouring the ocean,” added Lewin.
