Swimming banned at several beaches
Shark safety gear is traditionally removed from beaches in the South Coast due to the Sardine Run.
The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board reminds the public that several beaches are still closed for swimming.
This comes after a shark attack at Mfazazana near Hibberdene last Friday.
National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said that on Sunday, during ongoing search and recovery operations, Police K9 Search and Rescue and Water Policing and Diving Services located and recovered the body of a man, believe to be aged around 37 years old.
NSRI said the body recovered by police divers appears to show signs of ‘obvious shark wounds’. These are being investigated.
Formal identification of the man, in cooperation with police and government health forensic pathology services, is in progress; and police have opened an inquest docket.
The Sharks Board will notify the public when the listed beaches above will re-open for swimming.
Shark safety gear is traditionally removed from beaches in the South Coast due to the Sardine Run.
Some beaches have re-opened for swimming as the Sharks Board monitors sardine activity.
However, swimming is banned for now at Scottburgh, Umgababa, Karridene, Port Edward, Isipingo, Warner Beach, Amanzimtoti, Brighton, Anstey’s, Winkelspruit, Umkobi, Glenmore, Leisure Bay and TO Strand.
