Mid-South Coast residents are frustrated with the ongoing water shortages currently faced in the area. For several days, areas have had either no water at all, interrupted water supply or low pressure.
The locals have became increasingly irate as there has been no proper explanation as to why there have been constant water shortages. Ward councillors have reported these matters to Ugu and requested urgent feedback.
It has been emphasised on numerous community chat groups that the elderly folk suffer tremendously during this time. Further, businesses that cannot operate efficiently without water.
Ugu District Municipality was contacted for comment and was asked to provide a permanent solution (if any) to end the water crisis.
Spokesperson Zimbini Mpurwana explained that the Ugu district northern region receives its bulk water supply from both uMgeni-uThukela and eThekwini Water Supply EWS, specifically via the Craigieburn and South Coast Pipeline (SCP).
She said that a significant bulk interruption occurred on the SCP’s 1200mm pipeline, which was rectified in mid-June. However, during the system recovery, additional technical issues arose, hindering the system’s full recovery.
She said that consequently, supply has been compromised, necessitating intermediate supply arrangements.
“Relevant technical stakeholders convene weekly to assess the situation with executive stakeholders from Ugu, eThekwini, and uMngeni-uThukela scheduled to meet in August to discuss a medium to long term plan to address the reduced volume supplied to the Ugu northern area, ensuring a sustained and high-level service,” she said.
Mpurwana stressed that it’s important to recognise that Ugu, in conjunction with uMgeni-uThukela and eThekwini Municipality, has fostered a culture of transparency through regular communication with the public, utilising multiple communication platforms to inform the public about this issue.
In the meantime, residents are reminded that all water-related issues need to be reported directly to Ugu on 080 0092837.
