Vandals target Saints Walk bridges – again
Volunteers are frustrated as ongoing vandalism targets the bridges along the Saints Walk pathway.
Ongoing vandalism along the popular Saints Walk pathway has frustrated volunteers, who say they’ve had to replace 15 planks in the last two weeks alone – most of them on the bridge closest to St Michael’s Beach.
The footbridge – used daily by walkers, runners and parkrun participants – has become a repeat target for senseless destruction, with most incidents occurring on weekends.
Recently, Ivungu River Conservancy chairperson Bill Davis replaced two planks. By Monday last week, they had already been smashed again.
Volunteers from Uvongo parkrun, Ivungu River Conservancy and Tidy Towns Shelly Beach to Margate have worked tirelessly to maintain the pathway. Much of the funding for the construction and upkeep of the bridges has come from Margate Round Table.
“We ask the public to help us. Please be vigilant and report any suspicious activity along the Saints Walk shoreline pathway to the Uvongo Crime Prevention Forum or the Saps,” urged Davis.
A surveillance camera will soon be installed in an effort to deter further vandalism.
