Road in state of disrepair for a year
According to residents, a section of the road poses a great danger to all, and two accidents have occurred here.
Albersville Ratepayers’ Association’s Sal Musa says residents are frustrated at the poor state of a section of Ferndale Road in Marburg, which was dug up by Ugu District Municipality to fix a pipeline, but no-one has returned to repair the road.
In spite of residents’ communication attempts with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and Ugu District Municipality since July, 2024, no feedback has been received.
“We have asked numerous times as to reasons for the delay, but received no reply. This section of road poses a great danger to all, and two accidents have occurred here.”
Ugu’s spokesperson Zimbini Mpurwana said that the municipality has identified opportunities to improve the turnaround time for the reinstatement of surfaces after infrastructure exposure and repairs.
“A resolute task team has been established with the specific mandate to enhance the efficiency of reinstatement operations. The task team, constituted one month ago, has already commenced progress and is actively engaged in addressing the existing backlog on a daily basis. This initiative is expected to enable the municipality to gradually decrease reliance on outsourced services for similar work, although the transition may require time.”
Mpurwana concluded a procurement plan to outsource portions of this work will be implemented, to expedite the reinstatement of affected roads.
