R102 protest in Hibberdene draws support
The petition remains open for online signing until August 24.
The protest at the Hibberdene traffic lights on the R102 last Saturday morning received a strong response from passing motorists.
Ward 13 councillor Tessa Perryman said the response from motorists on the R102 and shoppers in the CBD was positive.
“Many have signed the petition, even if they couldn’t join the blue wave.”
The petition remains open for online signing until August 24.

Perryman is urging the public to support the petition calling on the Department of Transport (DoT) to extend planned rehabilitation works on the R102 (P3-1) within the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.
The R102 runs from Port Shepstone to the N2 at Hibberdene. Although the DoT has approved rehabilitation from Port Shepstone to the Umzumbe Bridge – covering 21km – the original plan included 27km.
This leaves the final stretch from the Umzumbe bridge to the N2, which Perryman says is in the worst condition, unrepaired.

“As Ward 13 councillor, I am tired of this ward being the forgotten stepchild,” she said.
“Ward 13 is the gateway to the South Coast, home to two Blue Flag beaches and a growing tourism economy. Yet it continues to be overlooked when it comes to infrastructure investment. Residents and motorists alike face deteriorating road conditions, posing serious safety risks and damaging local livelihoods.”
Perryman said the DA views this decision as both short-sighted and unjust and will not stand by while communities are neglected.

The petition will be submitted to the KZN Legislature and tabled for urgent consideration by DA KZN transport spokesperson, MPL Riona Gokool.
