Despite resuscitation attempts by medical teams, a man who got into difficulty while kayaking at a beach in the Umtentweni area was declared dead on the scene.

According to Mi7, its medical and security teams responded to the what appears to have been a drowning incident yesterday at around 10:00.

Mi7 said that, according to reports, the man experienced difficulty while kayaking and allegedly drowned.

Official comment from Saps is still being sought and the exact cause of death would require the results of an autopsy.

Bystanders rushed in and pulled him from the water, and immediately initiated resuscitation attempts.

“When medical teams arrived, from several service providers, resuscitation efforts continued. Unfortunately, these were unsuccessful and the man was declared dead on scene,” said Mi7.

The rescue team expressed condolences to family and loved ones of the man.

Recognition was given in acknowledgement of the efforts of bystanders who attempted the initial rescue, as well as the joint effort of all role players involved.
