Taxis impounded in Ugu, operators unhappy

Several taxi associations did not operate this morning.

Taxi owners from various associations under Santaco Ugu region met at Marburg Sportsground earlier this morning, to discuss the Department of Transport’s (DoT) Operation Shanela which has been back in the region for several weeks and has impounded a number of taxis.

This morning taxis from most associations did not operate.

Taxi owners say that when they last met in July 2024 with the KZM MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, they agreed that Operation Shanela will not return to the  South Coast until the permit issues are resolved.

They say Shanela is back in town and doing exactly the same thing they did last year.

At the meeting, owners agreed to submit a memorandum to Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) and that they will not operate until they receive further reassurances about Operation Shanela.

Another meeting between the Department of Transport, RNM and taxi associations is scheduled at the Council Chambers later this afternoon
