KZN summer likely to see above-average rainfall and hotter conditions
Communities are advised to take proactive measures to reduce flood risks, such as clearing drains and securing property.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) seasonal forecast predicts a hotter-than-normal summer for KwaZulu-Natal, with above-average rainfall expected in many areas. While this will benefit water reservoirs and agriculture, it also raises the risk of flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
Residents are urged to exercise caution and avoid flood-prone zones, while municipalities should ensure stormwater systems are functioning efficiently.
The El Niño-Southern Oscillation is currently neutral, but recent rapid cooling may trigger a weak La Niña in the coming month, typically associated with increased rainfall in the North-Eastern summer rainfall regions, this includes much of KZN. Communities are advised to take proactive measures to reduce flood risks, such as clearing drains and securing property.
Temperature forecasts indicate above-normal minimums and maximums across the province, which could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses and accelerate the growth of foodborne pathogens. Residents should stay hydrated, limit exposure during peak heat, and take care with perishable foods.
While summer brings outdoor enjoyment, SAWS reminds KwaZulu-Natal residents to remain vigilant against extreme weather and take steps to safeguard health and property as rainfall and temperatures rise.
