The gathering at Oceanic Restaurant highlighted the Department of Health’s commitment to promoting staff wellness, cultural diversity and unity in the workplace.
The event highlighted the hospital’s recognition that healthcare workers operate in highly demanding environments, caring for patients around the clock.

Through cultural presentations, music and shared traditions, the programme reflected South Africa’s rich diversity. Nursing leaders showcased different heritages including Coloured, Xhosa, Sotho and Zulu traditions, affirming the hospital’s commitment to embracing all cultures within its workforce.
Maqutu emphasised the importance of knowing one’s identity and appreciating others.
“When we celebrate our roots and learn from one another, we not only strengthen ourselves as individuals, but also as a united healthcare team committed to patient centred care. The celebration echoed the Batho Pele principles of respect, dignity and inclusivity, while reinforcing the Department of Health’s vision of growing KwaZulu-Natal together.”
It was more than just a festive occasion, the Heritage Day commemoration reinforced the link between cultural appreciation and staff wellness, showcasing how a united workforce translates into compassionate and quality care for patients.
