SPCA treats and vaccinates pets, offers hope in Umzumbe

The SPCA is appealing for support to continue their work helping animals in need.

Despite a cool, damp start to last Saturday morning, pet-owners in Fairview, outside Umzumbe, gratefully brought their pets to the Lower South Coast SPCA’s outreach clinic.

The aim was to give rabies vaccinations as well as treatment for ticks and fleas, deworming and minor wounds.

The SPCA began their work at Sqalimfundo Crèche, where 28 dogs, several puppies, and even a rather indignant cat were compassionately and efficiently attended to.

One lively pup was brought in a shopping carrier bag while a trio of tiny puppies was safely carried in a bag – proof that when help is provided, owners ‘make a plan’ to get their pets there.

The SPCA team, headed up by Tammy Nel, also compiled a list of animals whose owners requested sterilisation for their pets, a vital step in preventing unwanted litters and reducing suffering.

With the first rush of patients complete, the team moved inland to the Fairview Mission hall.

Initially, there was no sign of anyone but word quickly spread, and soon dogs were arriving with their owners on foot and in cars and bakkies, eager for SPCA assistance.

Puppies brought in a bag for their rabies injections.

In total, 70 dogs and a cat were vaccinated against rabies, a deadly yet preventable disease. Nine pets were treated for wounds and sores.

“Usually we offer ‘doggy bags’ of food, but our food supplies are extremely low at the moment, and sadly we had none to spare,” said the SPCA’s Gail Roets.

Why SPCAs need your support

SPCAs across the country are like most welfare organisations, under immense financial pressure.

The SPCA is the country’s only animal welfare organisation gazetted into law, with the authority to prosecute cruelty and protect all creatures, from pets and livestock to wildlife, reptiles, birds and fish.

Each SPCA is established by its community, and relies solely on it for funding. Larger financial donations are eligible for an 18A tax certificate on request.
