Scottburgh communities unite for Women’s Shutdown

Everyone wore black to stand in mourning and resistance.

A small group of community members from Scottburgh and surrounding areas stood in solidarity for the Women For Change’s G20 Women’s Shutdown – a nationwide action against gender-based violence and femicide.

Supporters gathered outside the Scottburgh courthouse last Friday, and held placards for the movement.

At 12:00, the group joined thousands of other supporters across the country in a 15 minute silent sit/lie down to honour the 15 women murdered every day, and bring South Africa to a complete standstill.

Everyone also wore black clothing to stand in mourning and resistance.

The Women For Change organisation called on all women and members of the LGBTQI+ community across South Africa to refrain from all paid and unpaid work in workplaces, universities and homes, and to spend no money for the entire day to demonstrate the economic and social impact of their absence.
