Rotary Club of Port Shepstone marks 75 years
The celebration highlighted the organisation's long-standing commitment to service above self, community development and fellowship.
Rotary Club of Port Shepstone marked a milestone recently, in celebrating its 75th anniversary at a year-end luncheon attended by Rotarians, Anns, friends of Rotary and a number of distinguished guests.
The event, themed Denim and Diamonds was held at Breakers Restaurant in Uvongo, symbolised both the club’s humble beginnings and the enduring value of its service to the community over the past seven-and-a-half-decades. The event was filled with fellowship, laughter and meaningful reflections on the club’s rich history and lasting impact.
Speaking at the celebration, assistant governor Shamin Maharaj said: “Seventy five years is not just a number – it represents generations of Rotarians who chose service, fellowship and integrity. We are standing on the shoulders of those who built this club with commitment and heart.”
The highlight of the celebration was the launch of a commemorative 75-year history brochure, which captures the journey of the Rotary Club of Port Shepstone since its founding.
Compiled by past assistant governor Rowan D’Arcy, with the assistance of fellow Rotarians, the booklet traces key moments, achievements, community projects and the history of its founding members who contributed to the club’s legacy. The brochure shares depth of service, consistency of community involvement and the calibre of people who have been part of the club over the years. Copies of the brochure are available to members of the public at a printing cost of R120.
Those interested may contact any Rotary Club of Port Shepstone member for assistance.
Reflecting on the club’s relationship with the community, Shamin Maharaj said this anniversary belongs as much to the community as it does to the club.
“Without the trust, support and partnerships built over the years, Rotary would not have been able to achieve what it has. The club therefore wishes to place on record its sincere appreciation to the Port Shepstone community and surrounding areas for their continued support over the past 75 years. This milestone stands as a testament to the trust placed in Rotary, the resilience of its members and their shared dedication to serving others.”
President Lulu Bodla said: “As we honour our past, we are equally committed to the future – continuing to serve with purpose, compassion and unity for generations to come.”
