Evidence of oil found on some KZN South Coast beaches
Beachgoers are urged to be cautious, especially when swimming, walking barefoot or visiting the beach with pets.
Beachgoers have reported smudges of oil on a few South Coast beaches this week.
A couple who went for a walk and swim at Banana Beach on Thursday had an unpleasant experience after visiting the tidal pool.
“My husband went for a swim at the tidal pool and when he came out his feet were covered in tar,” the woman said. “Our two small dogs also got tar on their paws and we’re not sure how to remove it safely.”
In a separate incident, another nature lover discovered oil at the beach near Southbroom’s Grannies Pool.
“At first it looks like animal droppings, but it’s sticky and clearly oil. You can’t get it off easily.”
The source of the oil has not yet been confirmed.
However, this comes after bathing at three Blue Flag beaches in KwaDukuza on the North Coast has been temporarily suspended following an oil spill along the coastline.
The amount of oil was not extensive, but Salt Rock Main Beach, Thompson’s Bay and Willard Beach were closed to bathers as a precautionary safety measure.
Beachgoers are urged to be cautious, especially when swimming, walking barefoot or visiting the beach with pets, and to report sightings of oil pollution to the relevant authorities.
