Kavady prayer at South Coast temples this Sunday
The festival is characterised by vibrant processions and traditional music.
Thaipoosam Kavady is an annual 10-day festival of devotion, penance and sacrifice to Lord Muruga, the deity of youth, power and virtue.
On the main prayer day, this Sunday (1st) devotees will carry decorated, arched structures (Kavady) on their shoulders, often filled with milk to symbolise bearing life’s burdens to the Lord for guidance, healing and strength.
* The Port Shepstone Tamil Association’s Kavady prayers today (Thursday) and Friday starts at 18:30 and at 17:00 on Saturday. The main prayer day will be held this Sunday at the temple. For enquiries, contact the secretary Radha Moodley on 071 4835568.
* The Umbango Sri Siva Soobramoniar Temple’s weekday prayers are at 18:00 and at 15:00 on Saturday. The main prayer day will be observed on Sunday. * The Umzinkuluwana Shri Siva Soobramoniar Temple will host its 86th Thaipoosam Kavady this Sunday at the temple from 07:00 proceeding to the NPC grounds.
